The Secret To Apple's Success
Hey đź‘‹
Welcome to Neighbourhood Post issue #3 - easy to implement digital marketing ideas straight through your metaphorical letterbox.
I hope you’ve had a good week.
We’ve mostly been trying to reconcile the contradiction of it still being 18°C in October with seeing advent calendars in supermarkets. 🤯
Anyway, on with today’s newsletter - we’ll be learning more in 7 minutes than most do in 3 years of a marketing degree.
👉 By the way, if you’ve missed previous newsletters you’ll find them here.

The best 7 minutes on marketing you’ll ever watch 🎬
After I graduated, I studied a post-grad qualification in marketing at Staffordshire University.
It was helpful to a point.
It taught me about features/benefits, about the Four P’s of Marketing, about supply and demand and that there’s a university in Stoke-on-Trent.
However what I’ve learnt since has been so much more helpful, to the point where I often question the value of that qualification.
No more so than when I watched a 7 minute video of Steve Jobs. 👇 🎬
I would highly recommend watching the whole thing, but if you’re short on time you absolutely have to watch the first 2 minutes and 21 seconds.
Here’s the gist in 6 points:
This is a very complicated and noisy world
People are not going to remember very much about us
So we have to be really clear on what we want them to know
We don’t have time to talk about the details
People want to know who we are and what we stand for
Marketing is all about values
The video is from early on in Job’s (second) tenure at Apple.
We’re watching the early decisions that lay the foundation for gigantic growth.
They are the foundations that Apple’s success was built on.
So we should pay attention.
I could go on, but that 7 minutes of video is far more worthy of your time, so here are two thoughts to end with:
💠Apple’s core value was believing that people with passion can change the world. Who is your company and what do you stand for? Where do you fit in this world?
đź’ Are you investing enough time and resource into communicating that value? Or are you spending too much time in the weeds, sharing details of your products and services. Have you got the balance right?
What we’re looking at 👀 and listening to 👂
🎧 Dan would highly recommend the Uncensored CMO podcast, featuring interviews with marketing leaders from places like LEGO and beyond. Start with “The myths of marketing live with Tom Goodwin” episode.
📺 We’re pleased to report, after the update in our first Newsletter, Lillie’s persevered with The Bear on Disney+ and to use her exact words: “oh yeah i LOVE it, we are on season two.”
Before you go - we’ll never use these newsletters to directly sell you our services, but we’re always here if you need any expertise or support 👍
